What have I been up to?

Hmm what have I been up to?? Ohh, just...everything. After the patina blog hop I bought more stampings. Then I bought sheet metal and stamping blanks. Then I bought the Vintaj BigKick embosser and yet more patina inks. A friend gave me some tips on some more natural patinas using salt and ammonia.

The weather has been dreary and that is when I work best so I have been working more. We also finally moved into a bigger (and safer) place. I say safer because our car was stolen during Spring break. That sucked. Before that a building was on fire and the fire alarms didn't work. And more bad stuff before that, but we're out now. And...drumroll please...I finally have a workshop! But I call it the "woman cave."

And I'm still obsessed with elf ears...

And making corset rings with my embosser...

Right now I am playing with the ammonia and salt patina...

More on this later...

Look, a desk! And it's already full...

My rocks and fossils are now on display and away from little grabby hands...

Patina Compass Blog Hop Reveal

*Updated with better pics!*
Kathy Lindemer of Bay Moon Design created a blog hop themed around patinas and a compass decorivet. I had always wanted to try my hand at patinas and vintage inspired jewelry so I decided to jump in. I forgot to get a picture of what the compass looked like when I received it in the mail, but you can view it here: Patina Blog Hop

I also forgot to get a picture of the first few steps (oops). I applied 3 different colored patinas with a brush, let dry for a few hours, and then sanded to bring up the raised edges. It was kinda like a treasure hunt and it was all I needed to get me hooked. I sandwiched the compass, another metal stamping I already had, and a hammered wire copper loop with a large wire coil and some Weldbond glue. I then contemplated a bracelet.

Hmmmm book chain. Yes, I like the book chain. And Czech glass beaded chain as well.
The back with the wire coil I made to sandwich the bottom brass stamping with the hammered copper wire loop.

Added a bit of bling in the middle and on the unoccupied loops of the brass stamping by means of E6000 glue and a swarovski crystal. I attached a decorative, antiqued copper, magnetic clasp. I also added a hand wrapped flower headpin charm and a howlite skull and crystal charm.
The end result. Yay! I love it.

This has inspired me to make more and I am currently working on this butterfly. I layered the patina colors, sanded, and after I sprayed with Mod Podge acrylic sealer it created a neat crackle effect.

The Treasury Tavern

I have read a lot of people's goals for 2014 and my favorite has to be all the "pay-it-forward" projects. I do believe in karma, and that you get back what you send out into the world. Since 2013 was a rough year for me, I have decided that 2014 is the year of "love" and that is what I'd like to send back out into the world (I've already given out some "love" and heart necklaces to get the year going!)

My "pay-it-forward" project was creating The Treasury Tavern Facebook page today. I have been creating a treasury (sometimes two, even three!) every day since well before Christmas. It's a nice calm start to my day and often gives me inspiration for my own work.

(Some of my recent treasuries)

There will be regular calls for themed and well thought out treasuries, giveaways, games, you name it! I think it's going to be really fun. I am also looking for admins! Please message or comment here if you are interested in being an admin. Admin duties include: Making treasuries, keeping the peace, and helping set up/manage giveaways and events.

Would you like to be featured in my treasuries? It's simple. Just click "like" on my Page: The Treasury Tavern

Viking knit ALL the things!

In one of my jewelry groups on facebook (Wire Wrap Jewelry Artists) I saw someone viking knit with small scale licorice leather. I immediately wanted to try it, but all I had was waxed cotton cord (in 2 colors.) I figured waxed cotton would work just as well and it did.

After a few rounds on the dowel, I noticed fraying. So I glued the end. Once the glue dried, it had hardened the end and made it kinda like a needle. This enabled me to speed up my weaving. They are so soft! I will be making many.

Here is a great progression collage to show some detail.

Both bracelets are for sale right now in my shop.
